Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Application Reliability Engineer (ARE) / Application Lead to lead a production stability and reliability improvement initiative across business-critical applications. This consultant will assess recurring production incidents, identify underlying application and operational issues, and develop a focused, measurable plan to improve system stability, reliability, resiliency, performance, monitoring, alerting, and overall operational effectiveness.

The ideal candidate brings a strong application-centric perspective to reliability engineering and smooth production operations. They can investigate production instability beyond surface-level symptoms, distinguish actionable signals from incident and alert noise, improve end-to-end observability, guide performance tuning, automate repetitive operational work, and recommend foundational application-design improvements that reduce operational risk.

Key Responsibilities

Reliability and Production Stability

  • Lead a production stability initiative for assigned applications and services.
  • Assess the current reliability posture, including recurring incidents, service degradation patterns, operational pain points, manual operational activities, and areas of elevated production risk.
  • Define and prioritize reliability improvements that deliver measurable reductions in incidents, customer impact, alert noise, operational toil, and time to recovery.
  • Establish a practical roadmap for improving application resilience, availability, recoverability, operational readiness, and service continuity.
  • Evaluate operational processes to identify gaps that affect responsiveness, stakeholder experience, incident resolution, and production support effectiveness.
  • Partner with engineering, operations, platform, infrastructure, and support teams to drive execution of the reliability plan.

Incident Management, Analysis, and Root Cause Resolution

  • Lead and support production incident reviews for high-impact, recurring, and complex operational issues.
  • Analyze production incidents and recurring operational issues to identify true root causes rather than only treating symptoms.
  • Review incident data, post-incident findings, logs, metrics, traces, application behavior, and dependency health to identify systemic failure patterns.
  • Differentiate actionable incidents from duplicate, low-value, or noisy alerts and events.
  • Facilitate or contribute to root cause analysis and corrective- and preventive-action planning.
  • Establish traceability for incidents, remediation actions, owners, dependencies, due dates, decisions, and stakeholder commitments.
  • Track remediation items through completion and validate that changes effectively reduce the likelihood or impact of future incidents.
  • Identify gaps in incident response, escalation procedures, runbooks, operational ownership, handoffs, and stakeholder communication workflows.
  • Improve incident-management practices to support timely triage, escalation, response, resolution, and follow-up.

Operational Automation and Process Improvement

  • Identify repetitive and manual operational tasks that create delays, inconsistencies, unnecessary toil, or production risk.
  • Recommend and drive automation opportunities for recurring support activities, incident-response tasks, health checks, data collection, remediation steps, and operational reporting.
  • Improve operational workflows to increase response consistency, reduce manual effort, and enable teams to focus on higher-value reliability improvements.
  • Define practical process improvements for incident handling, escalation, remediation tracking, change readiness, and service support.
  • Establish clear ownership, workflow visibility, and traceability for operational actions and cross-team dependencies.

Application Resiliency and Design Improvements

  • Evaluate applications from a resiliency and failure-mode perspective, including dependencies, integrations, data flows, error handling, retry behavior, timeouts, capacity constraints, and recovery mechanisms.
  • Recommend pragmatic improvements to application design and configuration that strengthen fault tolerance and reduce single points of failure.
  • Assess application behavior under degraded conditions and identify opportunities to improve graceful failure, recovery, and service continuity.
  • Identify application, integration, and dependency risks that could affect reliability, availability, performance, or customer experience.
  • Collaborate with technical leads and development teams to embed reliability considerations into application enhancements and remediation work.

Performance and Application Tuning

  • Identify performance bottlenecks and reliability risks related to application configuration, resource utilization, database interactions, integrations, batch workloads, transaction flows, and infrastructure dependencies.
  • Identify and prioritize opportunities to optimize system performance, responsiveness, throughput, stability, and production scalability.
  • Lead or support application tuning efforts to improve stability, responsiveness, throughput, and production performance.
  • Recommend improvements based on production telemetry, incident trends, observed usage patterns, and business-critical transaction behavior.
  • Validate the operational impact of tuning and remediation changes through measurable outcomes.

Monitoring, Alerting, and Observability

  • Assess the quality and effectiveness of current application monitoring, dashboards, logging, tracing, and alerting practices.
  • Identify gaps in end-to-end monitoring for critical user journeys, services, application components, integrations, dependencies, and business transactions.
  • Improve observability across application components, dependencies, integrations, and critical business transactions to enable earlier detection and faster diagnosis.
  • Reduce alert fatigue by improving alert thresholds, routing, deduplication, prioritization, escalation paths, and actionable alert content.
  • Define meaningful health indicators and operational metrics that reflect real application reliability, service health, and customer impact.
  • Enhance proactive monitoring and alerting capabilities to identify emerging service risks before they become customer-impacting incidents.
  • Create or enhance dashboards, operational views, and runbooks to support rapid issue detection, diagnosis, escalation, and resolution.
  • Implement clear alert-response procedures, including ownership, escalation criteria, and stakeholder communication expectations.

Stakeholder Leadership and Communication

  • Serve as the application reliability lead and trusted advisor for technical and operational stakeholders.
  • Translate incident trends, technical findings, process gaps, and operational risks into a clear, targeted reliability improvement plan.
  • Establish proactive communication practices for production incidents, service degradation, emerging risks, remediation progress, and operational priorities.
  • Ensure stakeholders receive timely, accurate, and actionable updates during incidents and throughout remediation activities.
  • Present progress, risks, priorities, dependencies, and outcomes to engineering leadership and relevant delivery teams.
  • Coordinate across teams to ensure ownership, sequencing, accountability, and timely completion of reliability remediation activities.
  • Maintain visibility into incident status, corrective actions, operational commitments, and cross-team dependencies.
  • Provide practical recommendations that balance urgency, business impact, engineering effort, operational risk, and long-term maintainability.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in application engineering, production support, site reliability engineering, application operations, systems engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience leading production stability, reliability, resiliency, operational excellence, or service-improvement initiatives.
  • Strong experience diagnosing and resolving complex production incidents in enterprise application environments.
  • Proven ability to perform root cause analysis and translate findings into durable corrective and preventive actions.
  • Experience conducting production incident reviews and driving remediation actions through completion.
  • Strong understanding of application architecture, distributed systems concepts, integrations, dependencies, failure modes, and operational risk.
  • Experience identifying and automating repetitive manual operational tasks to reduce toil and improve response consistency.
  • Experience with application performance analysis, optimization, and tuning.
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring, alerting, logging, tracing, dashboards, and observability practices.
  • Ability to identify end-to-end monitoring gaps and improve monitoring coverage for critical services, integrations, and business transactions.
  • Ability to identify and reduce alert noise while improving the actionability, routing, prioritization, and effectiveness of production alerts.
  • Experience establishing traceability for incidents, remediation actions, owners, dependencies, commitments, and operational follow-up.
  • Strong stakeholder-management and communication skills, including proactive communication during incidents, service degradation, and remediation work.
  • Experience collaborating with application development, infrastructure, platform, operations, and support teams.
  • Ability to work effectively as an independent consultant, prioritize high-impact work, and drive outcomes in a time-bound engagement.
  • Availability to work in alignment with US time zones from the Latin America region.
